It’s a familiar story. One that has been interpreted countless times and this adaptation from IDW Publishing is another faithful adaptation of the source material.

empire

The Galactic Empire has found the rebels on the ice planet of Hoth and the rebels must fight to escape and regroup. Han Solo, Chewbacca, Threepio and Leia barely escape on the Millennium Falcon and Luke Skywalker decides to take a side trip to the Dagobah system after a vision from Obi-Wan prompts him to seek out Jedi master Yoda.

Darth Vader is determined to find and capture Luke Skywalker and has convinced the Emperor that the young Jedi in training can be turned to serve the Dark Side of the Force. He enlists bounty hunters to travel throughout the galaxy and find the Falcon when they disappear.

Han manages to evade the Imperial fleet and, without a working hyperdrive, he finds the closest system he can that can repair the ship. Unfortunately, this system is run by an old friend Lando Calrissian and the two have a precarious relationship.

Luke struggles to learn the ways of the Force from Yoda and when his vision of the future includes his friends suffering, he abandons his training to find them in what Vader has set up to be an elaborate trap with a stunning revelation about the Sith Lord.

The story in this adaptation is already known so the only thing that can really be reviewed is the art. The art is stunning. There are some great panels throughout the graphic novel that put a new spin on some classic scenes including the confrontation between Han Solo and Vader on Bespin. This is a great looking graphic novel that uses an impressive anime-style art to tell the story and it works. Definitely an adaptation that someone unfamiliar with the source material could read and be engaged by.
