Her forces are non-existent. Her treasury is bare and she is facing off against an emperor who has conquered half the known world.

Sonja’s reign as Queen of Hyrkania did not start off auspiciously and Emperor Dragan wants to end it as suddenly as it began. At his capital city, he prepares his forces to march on Hyrkania and take it in order to stave off the curse that pushes the emperor to expand or die. As he says his farewells to his family, he is confident that the upcoming battle will be short.

He might be right. The Hyrkanian army is a joke and there is no money in the coffers to pay them anyway. Sonja is meeting with her War Council and listening to all of the bad news, including the newest member who is only on the Council because he won a contest. Things are dire for the country, but Sonja will not be deterred and she devises a plan with her last surviving family member that might solve two of their pressing problems in one swift stroke.

When Sonja’s forces successfully sabotage the Emperor’s ability to cross the river into her territory, he calls for a meeting with the new Queen. She agrees and in the course of their conversation, she determines and exploits his biggest weaknesses. When they leave, the emperor believes he has her right where he wants her and when he moves his forces into position to take the country, he discovers that he is tragically wrong.

Mark Russell has written and entertaining and engaging issue. The continuation of this story is taking some fun twists and turns and the best part of the saga is the evolution of Sonja as both a warrior and tactician. The entire issue subverts the expectations of the reader as Sonja subverts the expectations of the emperor and it is interesting to see. I can’t wait to see where this story goes next.

Mirko Colak’s art is amazing. There are so many beautifully detailed panels, especially the bridge sequence and the surprise ending.
