The Rundown: The first officer of the Omega returns to Earth as the planet begins to change.

After the Burn and immediately after the Klingon attack on Earth, Omega’s first officer Wowie Carter returns to Earth to his powerful and influential family because the ship is planning to leave for the planet Babel to meet with potential allies. With no warp drive, their trip will mean being away from the planet for over twenty years.
His first trip home is tense with his father disapproving of him staying in Starfleet. His next visit is years later and shows the aftermath of a planet trying to put itself back together and the fear of the unknown. His third trip is after the death of his father and he not only sees the fear in a friend who feels unwelcome on Earth, but also the lack of hope the end of the Federation has left behind.
The Story: Lanzing and Kelly slow things down in this issue and give the reader the individual cost of what happened. I like seeing the changes and shifts from Carter’s perspective and the way the story showcases the prejudices that fear elicits. There is some great drama throughout this issue and it does a great job of building on the world after the Burn.
The Art: Bonilla creates some beautifully detailed and visually captivating art. The imagery brilliantly captures the tone and mood of the story.
