The Rundown: A woman endures hell at the hands of five men and they become targets for her revenge.
Tee was a young woman working late at her warehouse job and trying to be a good friend to her co-worker who offered to stay and help by letting her go on a date. When she leaves for the night, she sees a group of five young men on the street opposite of her who corner and attack her. She is taken to an abandoned farm house where she is subjected to torture and violence daily for over a month.
When torturing her physically and emotionally stops being fun, she is set on fire and dumped in a local river. After being found and taken to a hospital, she escapes again only to be found in a church where the local minister tries to help her. Four years later, the young men meet for drinks not knowing that they are being watched.
The Story: The first issue starts with a much needed trigger warning because there is a lot of disturbing moments in this story. Were they necessary to tell this story? I’m not sure. I’m not judging or reviewing the story based on whether or not it deserves to exist. I’m reviewing it based on how I felt during and after reading it. Admittedly, I was unnerved by the apparent necessity of showcasing this much violence, but also intrigued about where Starks was going with it. Knowing this is a revenge story intrigues me because I have to wonder if the violence performed on this character was needed to tell her revenge story and what does that say about me as a reader wanting to see her get that revenge?
The Art: Kowalski crafts some darkly disturbing and detailed art throughout the issue and definitely captures the tone and mood of the story.
