Set in a vast array of Disney and Pixar worlds, KINGDOM HEARTS follows the journey of Sora, an unknowing heir to a spectacular power. Sora is joined by Donald Duck and Goofy to stop an evil force known as the Heartless from invading and overtaking the universe. Sora, Donald, and Goofy unite with iconic Disney-Pixar characters old and new to overcome tremendous challenges and persevere against the darkness threatening their worlds.
Using the Unreal Engine enhances the visual experience of this beautifully rendered game. All of the colors pop on screen and the animations are smooth, especially the transition from cut-scene to gameplay. The transition in visual styles from world to world is well done. Each level looks amazing with its own unique visual style and the characters look amazing as well. The recreation of San Fransokyo from Big Hero Six is one of the best worlds and gameplay experiences in the game itself.
Anyone who has played previous Kingdom Hearts games will be able to fall right back into the gameplay for Kingdom Hearts III. The combat controls are smooth, the commands are easy to access and the special moves are easy to perform when unlocked. There is a move that requires more precision jumps that can be a pain at times, but the gameplay itself is an easy and fun experience.
As a fan of this series, the release of Kingdom Hearts III was a must play. The story is engaging and the narrative takes the time to explain things to players who may not have played every previous game. There are moments in the story where the dialogue can feel a little forced and cringe-worthy, but the spirit of the game trumps that minor issue. The game is relentlessly fun and engaging, making it worth the time to both play and complete.
