The Rundown: One of the deepest secrets from one of the most unassuming characters in the X-Men universe has been revealed and the embrace of her destiny will change the fate of mutantkind.
Moira has always been an unassuming and almost hidden part of the history of the X-Men. She’s shown up when needed, but has always been on the sidelines away from the action. Now we know why. Moira McTaggert has been hiding a secret from everyone. One that will find her influencing events in the lives of Charles Xavier, Magneto and Apocalypse alike. She has followed the conflict between humans and mutants across time and taken part in those events for good or ill.
In all those past attempts, Moira has retained the knowledge of what came before and with that knowledge, she will help to reshape the conflict, starting with the Charles Xavier.
The Story: I was blown away by both this issue and this new take on Moira McTaggert. Jonathan Hickman has taken one of the most ubiquitous and unassuming characters in the X-Men lexicon and turned her into one of the most interesting characters you could imagine. Her connections to other characters, her varied history and the revelations about her abilities are fantastic storytelling. Hickman seems to be making a foundational shift for the X-Men and it is being done in ways that are both compelling to read and engaging as a fan of the X-Men. I am enamored with the fact that I have no idea what is going to come next in this series and that ability to be surprised is refreshing.
This series had already sparked my interest from the first issue and now its gotten my full attention after the revelations in this one.
The Art: Pepe Larraz delivers some truly beautiful art work in this issue. Every page is filled with amazing details and great looking characters.
