The Rundown: Jackie Estacado discovers a dark truth about his existence.
Years ago, a man thwarts the plans of some powerful beings by creating someone he says will be better than him. Years later, young Jackie Estacado is living in an orphanage until he is adopted by mobster Frankie Franchetti. Raised in the underworld, Jackie becomes an effective enforcer and killer, but his twenty first birthday will bring huge changes.
After turning twenty one, he begins hearing voices. When forces from factions of darkness and light discover him, they move in to either take him or kill him. As he is threatened during a battle, he embraces the darkness within and becomes a powerful, armored warrior who will become a target of multiple factions including the gangsters at war with his uncle.
The Story: Silvestri delivers a fun, thrilling and entertaining story in this first issue. There is great action as well as some fun and funny moments as events grow and evolve. I really enjoyed the inclusion of Sara into the story and how it connect to her as well as the converging storylines with the mob, Russians and the forces coming for Jackie specifically. There is a lot of drama brewing in this first issue and I am excited to see where the story goes next.
The Art: Benes crafts some beautifully detailed and visually rich art throughout the issue. Everything from the character designs to the action is heightened and stunning.
