After announcements that Mel Gibson was in the running to direct the big screen comic book movie and The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra rumored to be the frontrunner to take over the directing job from David Ayer, it was announced today that Warner Brothers has tapped The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor to take on the project.

The original film, which opened in 2016, brought in over $750 million on a budget of $175 million, making a sequel inevitable. The original starred Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis and Jared Leto. Smith and Robbie’s busy schedules (Smith is starring in Disney’s Aladdin and Robbie is currently filming Mary Queen of Scots) mean that there is no start date for the production.

No release date has been given for the sequel.
