The Ghosts of Whitestone

Doty, take this down. I’m told what’s down there is ghastly. I elected to stay upstairs, the strategic choice. I’m glad we weren’t there.

After the events of the last episode, this new one brings the story back to Whitestone and focuses on Percy for the most part and the unresolved moments from his past. Unfortunately, that past comes back to haunt him in a big way throughout this episode and he is forced to confront it both figuratively and literally.

It is almost impossible to review this episode without spoilers because there are some HUGE reveals for fans of Critical Role throughout the episode, but I will do my best.

First, I adore the beginning of the episode where Percy is restless and trying his best to get back to researching the orb and that Vex is the one to ground him through both force and compassion. This moment is contrasted with Keyleth and Vax as his Blight continues to spread and Keyleth is desperate to find a cure. While one moment is played with sincerity and humor, the other is played with deeper emotions and both are filled with the heart that I love to see from these relationships.

Eventually, Percy is forced to confront the loss of his family and discovers something buried beneath the castle that will force him to get the rest of the team together to investigate. Vox Machina delves into the hidden depths of Whitestone castle while Taryon and Trinket guard the entrance. Unfortunately (I’m going to be saying that a lot this episode), someone with intimate knowledge of the hidden passages and a connection to events arrives looking for something that could help her with her own agenda.

The team is separated beneath the castle and discover not only some dark experiments that are still running, but a potential cure. They also discover just how deep the Briarwoods were with the Whispered One. The head of the cult arrives and makes her presence known to the group as Vex finds herself in the presence of another experiment that will be painfully familiar to fans of Critical Role outside the animated series.

One of the things that I truly enjoyed about this episode is that is does feel like one that is for die hard fans of these characters and the campaigns of Critical Role. This is why I struggle not to spoil anything in the episode because this is the one I believe CR fans should experience the most.

As always, there is great action and visual thrills throughout the episode. So many things get revealed that have relevance to not only the overall plot of the season, but the characters themselves and I loved every reveal. This is definitely a highlight of the season and the perfect tonal and narrative continuation of the events and tone of the previous episode.
