Taryon, My Wayward Son

Doty, take this down. We’ve traveled to my hometown, which I was hoping to avoid. My Family’s business is more complicated than I remembered. Short Stuff has strange visions and Four Eyes is playing card games. I had some strong words for my father.

Vox Machina and their newest member Taryon Darrington travel to his home town of Deastock in Wildemount to search for answers regarding the gems the cult used during their recent attack. A trip that will allow them to visit with Taryon’s father Howaardt Darrington. The beginning scene is pure fun with the group having to endure a musical number from Tary as they sail through the clouds.

Upon arriving, they see the opulence of the Darrington estate as well as discover the extent of Taryon’s relationship with his father. It’s a dark series of moments as Howaardt dotes on the rest of the team while constantly insulting Tary in front of them. There is some interesting tension in those moments, but it doesn’t really develop.

The members of Vox Machina immediately realize something is wrong with the Darrington home and proceed to look for clues. This is when the story begins to take off as the group uncovers some shady connections to the Darrington patriarch while trying to convince Tary that his father is a bad person. This leads to some hilarious moments, but ultimately don’t add anything significant to the Taryon/Howaardt dynamic.

Percy and Grog find themselves playing a game with Howaardt that includes something fans of the campaign will recognize. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the payoff I was expecting and feels like it was added merely for fan service purposes.

Eventually, the team convinces Taryon to join them on a mission to investigate the source of the gems and the connection to Darrington is made abundantly clear to everyone but Tary. Pike sees a vision connected to the Everlight and frankly, I wanted more of that part of the story to be explored in this episode. So much of this episode felt like filler and not in a good way.

There is some great action throughout the episode and some fun and funny moments. Unfortunately, the story felt weaker than the previous three episodes but it does move elements of the story forward in a way that kept my attention. I’m hoping the next episode raises back to the bar episodes 1-3 set.
