Down And Out
Official Description – Amos and Clarissa are trapped in a collapsed building. Naomi contends with her old family. Holden assembles a new crew on the Roci. Alex and Bobbie make a dangerous discovery in the Belt.
Episode 5 marks the halfway point of another explosive 10 episode season of The Expanse. It picks up directly after The Free Navy’s attacks on Earth, Mars’s Parliament, and Tycho Station. There are several stories at play in the episode. Although 50 minutes is a decent run time, the episode moves quick as each integral story line delivers with intensity. This viewer was left wanting more.
Belter, Drummer’s Faction, receive news of Marco Inaros’s attack on Earth and Mars. His actions have now made relations between the Belt and the two planets more difficult. Commander Camina Drummer must now make hard decisions on what is best for her Belter sect.
We also find the separated crew of the Rocinante dealing with the fall out from Marco’s plan to liberate the Belt from Earth and Mars.
Clarissa and Amos are trapped on Earth in an underground maximum security level UN prison, known as “The Pit,” after the asteroid attack on Earth. The two work with survivors in an attempt to free themselves from the devastation.
James Holden and Bull remain in the Belt on Tycho station. They must cope with the assassination of OPA leader Fred Johnson and the theft of the protomolecule.
Alex and Bobbie have left Mars and are tracking Martian supply ship, The Barkeith, to provide information on illegal arms sales to Avasarala.
The main plot of the episode centers around Naomi. She is still trapped on The Pella with Marco, their son Filip, and the family of her past. Naomi takes us through an emotional journey as she deals with her past alliances while seeking to return to her current lover and crew members. This section is both riveting and intense. There are glimpses at the dynamics of Marco’s movement and how it plays into Naomi’s past.
One of the best things about this episode, is that expounds upon one of the central themes of the show. And that is the exploration of class dynamics. It explores how humanity builds itself into a caste system. It also shows how the line between freedom fighting and terrorism is blurred depending on the perspective of the people involved.
Action packed and intellectually stimulating.
