The Rundown: Batwoman’s search for answers regarding a homicide leads her to Harley Quinn.

At the Gotham City Courthouse, Batwoman, with the assistance of Oracle, investigate a murder. Soon, she finds herself in an exchange with a new enemy. Meanwhile, at Blackgate Penitentiary, Harley reflects on her current situation and reminisces about previous escapades. Afterwards, a visit from Kevin leaves her unhappy. Later, she finds herself at the center of a cafeteria brawl when she is aided by someone unexpected. Elsewhere, Kevin and Sam have an interesting conversation regarding Harley’s motivations.

The Story: I really liked this chapter. There is some interesting foreshadowing happening as well as the seeds of a potentially mind-blowing team up. As always, Harley takes things in stride, but I am curious whether or not Kevin’s thoughts regarding her incarceration will affect her in later episodes. Her odd mix of whimsy and wisdom makes for an interesting watch.

Also, I would be remiss if I did not touch upon Harley’s commentary on the prison industry. I applaud Phillips for using this storyline as an opportunity to educate readers on the destructive nature of incarceration and the profiteering involved in its continuance.

The Art: The modern, youthful, and often dizzying styling of this issue fits in perfectly with Harley Quinn’s overall vibe. The bold colors used are eye-catching and the attention to background as an additional transportive quality to the issue.
