The Rundown: Jesse finds love with one of the workers and her sisters discover the dark truth beneath the land.
Jesse is continuing the story she has written for her sisters when the two girls arrive to tell her of the creature they saw coming from beneath the land. Dismissing the story, Jesse runs off into the woods with young Billy to spend some time together as her sisters hear a child crying from deep in the woods.
As their mother gets a visit from another gentleman who thinks he is meeting his new wife, she spots Jesse and Billy near the barn. At the same time, young Haddy and her sister discover the old woman they think is a witch digging in the dirt and learn the dark truth about what lurks beneath their feet. A dark truth that emerges the night Jesse is confronted by her mother for the secret she’s keeping.
The Story: Cleveland continues to craft a dark and intense mystery in this story. I love the buildup of suspense and tension throughout the story and how the girls stumble upon the dark truth that surrounds them. I love these types of dark tales and this issue has a wonderful cliffhanger ending that makes me excited to see what happens next.
The Art: Cormack delivers beautiful art throughout the issue. I love the visual style of the series and the menacing shades and shadows used when we see the mother.
