The Rundown: Uhura finds herself transported through time to a dark period in history.
The Enterprise is orbiting a planet when sensors discover a disruption coming from the planet’s surface. A disturbance that indicates something to do with time. Spock assembles an away team and they beam to the surface only to find a strange man standing among a series of mirrors depicting different moments in time.
When a quake on the surface pushes Uhura into one of the mirrors, she finds herself in the American south during the 1960’s. As she is befriended by a local student organizer and deals with discrimination and bigotry, Uhura finds herself drawn into the fight for equality as well as meeting someone directly connected to events. At the same time, Spock and Kirk enter the mirror in order to find Uhura and bring her home.
The Story: Williams crafts an engaging and compelling story in this one shot. It’s a great story that highlights the struggle of black people during that time told through the lens of someone who is far removed from it but still prompted to act. I love the self-contained nature of this story and how it reminds me of an episode of the series both in structure and tone. A great love letter to the character and her impact on the past, present and future.
The Art: I absolutely love the art in this issue. It is brilliantly detailed and visually exciting. What I love the most is its old school style and feel. Everything looks amazing and the issue has a wonderful newsprint style feel to the visuals.
