The Rundown: A group of space explorers find themselves on an alien planet that has a secret.
Arlo Chapel is the first officer on a ship heading to an unknown planet. When his fellow crewmembers awaken, they land on the planet to find that not only can it support life, but it has life on it. Life that seems to mirror thoughts in their heads as they continue to explore its strange landscape.
After performing an act of violence, the crew and Arlo are taken to a local prison where they discover a means of escape. An escape that will lead to a revelation about the planet and their own reasons for being on it as well as a choice that not all of them will make.
The Story: I understand what Scioli was trying to do in this issue. Unfortunately, the story just falls apart at multiple moments because it doesn’t seem to have a sense of itself or what it wants from any given plot point. Moments I expect were supposed to be scary are decidedly not. Moments that should be suspenseful become silly and there is so much exposition in the final reveal that the twist that Twilight Zone stories are known for has no emotional weight for either the characters or the reader.
The Art: Scioli delivers some great retro styled art that I really enjoyed. Even if the story didn’t feel like something from the Twilight Zone, it definitely looked like it did.
