After the announcement by Peter Capaldi that he was leaving the role of the Doctor on the hit BBC series, speculation ran rampant about who would take over when the Doctor regenerated.

While most people speculated on which actor would take over the role, a small minority of fans began to speculate on whether or not the next Doctor would be a man or a woman. After an exhaustive search, the BBC announced the next Doctor to take over the iconic role.

Jodie Whittaker has been announced as the 13th Doctor for the series. Whittaker will be the first actress to take on the role of the time traveling adventurer in the upcoming new season of the series.

Whittaker is known for her roles in the series Cranford, the movies Attack the Block and Hello Carter and most recently as Beth Latimer on the acclaimed series Broadchurch.

Traditionally, the next Doctor will make (her) first appearance on the Christmas Special and this time is no different. Whittaker will premiere as the next Doctor on the 2017 Christmas Special which will be written by longtime Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat and directed by Rachel Talalay.

The Doctor Who Christmas Special will air in the UK December 25, 2017.
