The premiere episode of the CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery is only a few days away and fans of the Star Trek universe were treated to a huge piece of news from a beloved Trek alum and director.

Star Trek: The Next Generation alum Jonathan Frakes (Commander Riker on the series and movies) has had tremendous success as a director both on the big and small screen. So much in fact, that he has been brought in to direct an episode of the new series Star Trek: Discovery. During a Star Trek reunion panel in Chicago, the director and star let slip that the new series will feature an episode that takes place in the Mirror Universe.

For those not familiar with the Mirror Universe, it originally appeared on an episode of the original Star Trek series called Mirror, Mirror. The inhabitants of the universe look exactly like their other universe counterparts, but they are aggressive, opportunistic and ruthless in their pursuit of power. The universe would be visited again more extensively in the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and a two-part episode of Star Trek: Enterprise takes place exclusively in that universe.

It is unknown how the crew of Discovery will find themselves in the Mirror universe, but the announcement does signal that the producers are looking to the canon of the series when crafting the story for this new ship and crew. Whether or not it pays off remains to be seen.

Star Trek: Discovery premiers on CBS September 24, 2017 before moving to CBS: All Access for the remainder of its run.
