The Rundown: A park ranger finds herself looking for the disturbed son of a dangerous local matriarch.

Marie is a park ranger is one of the more dangerous parts of the Louisiana Bayou. When the rest of her fellow rangers come down with a mysterious illness, a pregnant Marie is left alone to deal with not only her job, but also the demands of Mrs. Watters, the ruthless head of a moonshine family who wants to know the location of her missing boy Buck.
After discovering that the rest of the rangers are suffering from food poisoning, Marie is on her own as she answers a call about someone strange in the woods. After discovering that it is a frenzied Buck who is trying to kill her, Marie acts to protect herself and her unborn child. An act that could have dangerous consequences for her if Watters learns the truth.
The Story: Spurrier crafts a dark, dangerous and entertaining psychological thriller in this first issue. I love the tone, atmosphere and stakes for the character. All the characters are interesting and present some great dramatic teases that I look forward to seeing play out. The dynamic between Marie and Watters is going to be intense and I like how tense the story gets once Marie is confronted by Buck and the consequences of the actions she takes. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
The Art: Del Rey delivers dark, beautifully detailed and evocative art throughout the issue. The visual style is perfect for the setting, the story and the characters.
