The Mighty Nein
Prime Video
Season 1 Episode 8
The Zadash Job
After the Mighty Nein reunite, they embark on an elaborate heist to steal the mysterious Kryn artifact for The Gentleman. But when their plan completely falls apart, it’s unclear how the Nein will even escape with their lives.

The first season finale of the Mighty Nein has a lot of ground to cover and a lot of story elements to get right to both set the tone for the rest of the seasons to come and also give both new fans and longtime fans of the campaign a reason to both be excited and satisfied. As a longtime fan I can say, they knock it out of the park with this episode.

It begins with tragedy as the mysterious Yasha is showcased in a moment of both uncharacteristic bliss and visual as well as visceral horror as she relives a moment from her past that is tragically taken from her to return her to her mission in Zadash. It is a beautifully animated and scary visual and Liam McIntyre’s voice as Obann is brilliant. The Nein find themselves back with the Gentleman going over how they plan to infiltrate the party and steal the beacon. It’s a fun and funny scene especially the banter between Jester and The Gentleman.

I really liked the planning scene and how each member of the Nein is integrated into it. I also like that everything takes a dramatic turn when things have to change within the plan and those changes allow not only for Beau to reveal a secret from her past, but also give Fjord and Jester a very sweet and engaging moment. It reveals a wonderfully introspective moment for Jester that shows she is more than just the fun and lightness of the group.

The group makes it to the party with Beau and Fjord being inside and Jester scaling the outer wall. There are some fun moments as well as sweet ones but the suspense in this moment is fantastic. I love the buildup as each team gets into position and how things come to a dramatic and action packed head when an attack occurs that will leave the Nein scrambling to complete their mission while also putting themselves directly into conflict with Trent and his volstrucker.

Jester gets a last minute rescue from her patron as the action heats up with Beau vs Astrid. Among the violence, there is another confrontation that I wasn’t expecting and was pleasantly surprised by as Molly’s past comes back to haunt him in dramatic fashion. Caleb finds himself confronted by Trent and tempted to return to his former life. Things get more intense when the attack and there is some truly amazing animation throughout the final sequences of the episode. Everything comes together with the characters as well as a final confrontation with Yasha as the episode closes.
The final episode of The Mighty Nein season one is a brilliantly acted, wonderfully animated and thematically amazing piece of media. So many elements work and I found it difficult to find any flaws in either the acting, animation or story. It’s the perfect way to end a season as it not only ramps up the existing conflicts, but adds new ones. I cannot wait for the next season of this series.
