The Rundown: Sonja continues to kill for the wizard as the truth behind one of her enemies is revealed.
Sonja is still under the control of the wizard Brelaq. Her punishment for killing his thieving and murderous son. Unfortunately, that means that the men of the kingdom sent to kill the evil wizard have to get past a Sonja that cannot control her actions and also cannot be killed. At the same time, the truth of the thief is revealed as well as his connection to the prince. He also reveals his connection to Sonja and why he wants to kill her himself. A hatred that will create an unusual alliance between the two.
Sonja continues to fight against the enchantment with her words even though she cannot physically stop from doing what the wizard commands. After reminding him of his own hand in his son’s death, the wizard sends Sonja to wait for more troops to arrive. When a friend tries to reason with Sonja, she warns him to flee as the wizard contemplates his actions and what he has left.
The Story: Palmiotti and Conner deliver an exciting story in this issue that is filled with great twists, turns and reveals. Sonja’s introspection is some great writing and her trying to appeal to Brelaq on a human level is a great tactic. The action is great and I love the reveal of both the prince’s relationship to the thief as well as the man’s history with Sonja. There are so many great moments throughout this issue that I cannot wait to see what happens next.
The Art: Moritat delivers some exciting visuals throughout the issue. There are great action beats filled with beautiful detail and the art perfectly captures the tone of the story.
