The Rundown: A devastating battle leaves one student dead and another willing to do anything to bring him back.

In the aftermath of their encounter with the Hollow, the students of Strange Academy barely make it back, but two of their number are down. Emily awakens at the Academy unsure of what happened to her and filled with grief when she discovers that Doyle is dead. Zelma reveals what happened when they returned and how Strange had to resort to some complicated methods to bring her back from the brink and siphon off the power raging inside her.

As the cost of keeping the Academy running continues to grow, Voodoo heads to the Dark Dimension to see if there is anything Dormmamu is willing to do to save his son. With all hope seemingly lost, Emily will find a power she did not know she had and it might be exactly what she needs to bring Doyle back. Unfortunately, all magic has a cost.

The Story: Skottie Young brings the characters, the story and their stakes into focus with this issue. Everything that has led to this point has been great teen drama and fun, but this story lays out the darkness brimming beneath the surface beautifully as it raises the stakes for the characters, especially Emily. Young effectively uses the supporting cast of the series in this issue, but never loses focus on Emily at the story’s center.

The Art: Ramos is a master at bringing beautiful details to every page and this issue is no different. What adds to the story are some amazing tonal choices in some of the scenes. Great looking imagery throughout.
