Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi

Disney Plus

Season 1 Episode 3

Part III

Obi-Wan searches for allies.

As we watch Obi-Wan reach out to Qui-Gon again, there is a beautiful montage as he comes to term with the truth and we see the return of Darth Vader. The sequence is brilliantly done and showcases the menace of the character as well as his resolve. We also get a sense of what the 3rd Sister wants, but there is a sense that there is something personal in her hunt as well. Something that makes the interactions between her and Vader seem more interesting.

The look of the opening sequence is perfect and the transition to the Inquisitor base is just as good with Reva returning to her fellow Inquisitors and establishing dominance. The contrast with Obi-Wan and Leia on the mining planet is executed well and I continue to like the interactions between the two of them as she is fearless and he is a little too cautious.

There’s a great moment of tension when Obi-Wan and Leia find themselves on a transport with a group of Stormtroopers and a slip of the tongue almost costs them everything. Things get even tenser when they come upon a checkpoint and discover an unexpected ally. I love the tension throughout this sequence because the stakes continue to mount in an organic way that doesn’t feel forced.

One of the interesting element of the episode is that the Stormtroopers actually are menacing. They have a level of threat that has not really been seen before. You get the sense of how dangerous the universe is under the Empire. I love the character of Tala and her interactions with Obi-Wan and Leia. It shows the character that there are still people willing to fight. That moment is great, but it gets even better when a familiar face arrives.

There is a brilliantly tense showdown in the episode that has great foreshadowing of events to come. It also has an awesome moment with the character that is truly scary and showcases how menacing Darth Vader is.  There is so much great tension throughout the episode and even Reva’s journey allows for it as well. The entire episode is amazing from start to dramatic and tension filled end.
