The Rundown: Doctor M’Benga finds himself in the midst of a nightmare inspired by the works of Poe.

M’Benga continues to hide his sick daughter from the rest of the crew by keeping her in the transporter pattern buffer. As the Enterprise is scanning a nearby nebula, the doctor is reading to his daughter before returning her to the buffer. When the Enterprise finds itself trapped in the nebula, M’Benga discovers that something has happened to the ship and its crew.

Traveling through a series of nightmare scenarios based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Dr. M’Benga must find a way to free the crew from their delusions of being characters in the writer’s story while also finding a way to help his daughter alongside the only other members of the crew seemingly unaffected, Chief Engineer Hemmer.

The Story: Gray creates a great homage to the works of Poe and the influence that literature has always had on the world of Star Trek. There are some great personal moments in the story for M’Benga and I like that the story puts him through some emotional turmoil as he focuses on not only helping the crew, but also his daughter. A dark, engaging story with a great emotional payoff.

The Art: Price delivers some great visuals throughout the story. I not only love the visual style of the story and the character designs, but also the subtle things like the pages everywhere and what they say.
