'Secret Empire' Looks to Change the Marvel Universe Again, possibly for the Better.

Our beloved Marvel heroes have been put through the ringer during the recent Civil War II storyline and it looks like that was just the precursor to something that will have wide-reaching repercussions to many of the heroes of the Marvel Universe.

With all of the changes happening in the Marvel universe since the end of Civil War II, the heroes are going to be looking for someone to turn to help them turn things around. Meaning that they will turn to who they normally turn to for moral and ethical guidance: Captain America. Unfortunately, we all know why that’s a mistake.

Marvel’s Senior Vice President Tom Brevoort and Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso sat down in an exclusive interview with ABCNews and talked about some of the changes coming to the Marvel universe and Captain America specifically. The series, written by Nick Spencer (Captain America: Steve Rogers), will see the culmination of Steve’s plans and also his exposure as a HYDRA agent. According to Brevoort:

“His plans and Hydra’s plans will have begun to unfurl,” Brevoort continued. “We are done with the covert portion, the buildup portion of the program, ‘Secret Empire’ if the pyrotechnics, the big Michael Bay blockbuster, huge colossal struggles and battles across the Marvel Universe, with all of our key characters and players taking on a big role.”

The events in question will begin with a series of incidents that allow Cap, as the head of spy and security agency S.H.I.E.L.D, to dispatch various teams of heroes to different locations to contain the threat. Unbeknownst to them is that this is all part of Steve’s overall plan. He’s calling issue #0 “The worst day of the Marvel Universe” and adds that by Issue #1 Cap’s true motives will be known to the Marvel Universe.

While a lot of the story will deal with the aftermath of Cap’s betrayal, there will be a change in many of the young heroes, especially in how they choose to be heroes going forward.

Take heart true believers. Both Alonso and Brevoort want to assure readers that they have a plan at the end of ‘Secret Empire’. They point to recent storylines like Civil War II and Inhumans vs X-Men as examples of dark storylines that divided the Marvel Hereoes. Secret Empire will be an instrument to finally unify the heroes of the Marvel Universe as they are all mutually allied against a single threat. Both Alonso and Brevoort also assured fans that this has been in the works for over a year and they know how things are going to end including what comes next.

Secret Empire Issue #0 will be released in April with Issue #1 coming May 2017.
