Academy Award winning director Ang Lee is bringing a new vision to the screen.

It’s been announced that the director of Brokeback Mountain, Life of Pi and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon would be taking on the sci-fi thriller Gemini Man as his next film. The film has been in development for the last twenty years and is currently being produced by Skydance, Paramount and Jerry Bruckheimer Films. Will Smith is set to star in the film written by Game of Thrones co-creator and writer David Benioff.

Gemini Man tells the story of an aging NSA agent (Smith) who is set to retire. Upon announcing his retirement, he is targeted for death. The sci-fi twist is that the assassin who is sent to kill him is a cloned version of his younger self. Part of the reason that the movie has taken so long in development was due to the limitations of special effects technology that would allow one actor to play both roles on screen at different ages. With the ability to digitally de-age and facially alter actors, as seen in films like Rogue One and in the most recent Pirates of the Caribbean movie, the technology exists to allow Smith to play both roles.

No word yet on additional casting, but the studio has enough confidence in the project and the people behind it that they have already given Gemini Man a release date during awards season.

Gemini Man is set to be released in October 2019.
