Pearl prepares herself for some dangerous negotiations as the Endo Twins prepare their next move.

The history of the Endo Twins takes the spotlight in this issue as Ryu Endo’s plans for an all-inclusive porn mall go up in flames. Not taking into account the internet, Ryu regrets the costly decision, but it does prove the loyalty of his sister and allows them to move forward with a new plan. This is a rare comedic moment in an otherwise serious series. It works well with these characters without diminishing the threat they pose.

Pearl has to see Mr. Miike to find a way to keep Rick alive as well as keep her shop. As she drops off her best friend at home, we learn more about Pearl’s life after her mother’s death and her father’s incarceration. It’s a sad story and one that has some sweet moments when Pearl and Rick are finally alone. When the pair finally go see Miike, the tension between all parties begins to bubble up to the surface and when the Endo Twins arrive on the scene, things get progressively worse.

There is a level of unpredictability to this story that I enjoy, especially in this issue. Bendis takes the time to dive into these characters in a way that makes them real and their reality becomes compelling in the face of what they are dealing with. I enjoy Pearl as a character and her journey continues to be interesting. Her personal pain and baby steps into this relationship are interesting to see.

Michael Gaydos pushes the limits with the art in this issue and there are many great, stylized moments throughout the story. A continually compelling story.
