Birds of Prey and Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie is hitting the high seas for Disney.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robbie has signed up to star in a new film set in the Pirates of the Caribbean universe made famous by Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow.
The film is not being touted as a spinoff or as the upcoming reboot from Pirates writer Ted Elliott. This film is set in the same universe as the Depp films, but is a completely separate story. Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer is producing both the Robbie film and the upcoming reboot.
Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson has been brought in to write the female fronted Pirates film. Hodson has previously written the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee before Birds of Prey and has written the upcoming Flash film starring Ezra Miller. She is also working on the script for a Batgirl solo film that was previously being developed by Joss Whedon.
Both Robbie and Hodson recently launched the Lucky Exports Pitch Program, an initiative to get more female writers hired by studios to write action films. There are currently no plot details about the upcoming Robbie Pirates film, but I will cover this project as it develops.
