Luke Cage finds himself driving through Northern Mississippi when he is pulled over by a police officer for speeding. After identifying himself and being let off with a warning, the officer proceeds to call in to tell his boss that there may be trouble coming. Luke stops at a local diner to get something to eat and gets the reaction that many people who look like he does would in the rural south. As he orders himself breakfast, he is being watched by someone on camera. As he asks for the check, the waitress recognizes him and sits down in the booth. She tells Luke that something isn’t right with her husband who works at the local prison. She tells him that something doesn’t feel right and she can’t explain it.
All of a sudden she gets up scared as a group of armed police officers burst into the restaurant. She tells Luke that they are being watched and the officers attack Luke. He defends himself against their attacks while also protecting the waitress. Luke is knocked unconscious via gas and he and the waitress are taken away. When Luke wakes up, he is confronted by the man in charge. Knowing that he can’t take on Luke physically, the man attacks Luke’s mind and then Cage finally awakens, he is in a hell that he thought he would never have to face again.
The rest of the issue is a short recap of the history of the character which is a kind of primer for those unfamiliar with Luke Cage.
This was a really good story that was simple in its overall plotting, but it spoke to something within the character that has always been an ongoing fear. Luke is put into a position where he’s going to have to confront his past in order to find a means of escape and that journey will be great to read if done well. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
