On Themyscira, a young Diana ignores the warnings of her mother and decides to follow a group of women deep into the forest. She witnesses an event that shakes her when she’s discovered, something happens that might be the key to the events currently happening around the world with magic. In the present Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Detective Chimp and Man-Bat find themselves fighting the reanimated corpses of recently deceased magic users. After defeating the horde, Diana decides she needs answers and Zatanna takes the group to someone who might have them, Doctor Fate.

Fate brings the group into his home as Swamp Thing chooses to remain outside and communicate with the Tree of Wonder. As the group is separated, Chimp and Langstrom discover previous Doctor Fate Khalid Nassour, Swamp Thing reveals a secret to John Constantine and Diana and Zatanna discover who is behind the forces trying to destroy all magic in the world. Unfortunately, the revelation hits close to home for the heroes.

Tynion IV does something really interesting with this second issue by revealing the big bad early. Rather than waste time on setup and subterfuge that might not pay off, he lays out the who and the why early on. It’s a great reveal as well. It gives the arc a sense of urgency and the story becomes more relevant because it becomes about the characters and what they are facing. I found the story to be more intriguing now that I know who is behind the scenes and his motives can only enhance what is becoming a really good story.

Bueno’s art really accentuates the tone of the story and there are some really vibrant and beautiful visuals in this issue. Every page enhanced the story by giving a great contrast between the beauty and details in the light and great use of shadows. Can’t wait to read what happens next.
