The Rundown:

Detective Chimp, Swamp Thing and the remaining magic users have been five minutes to decide whether to lose their abilities and memories of magic or be destroyed by Doctor Fate and the Lords of Order. Bobo decides on a third option and they all run for it to a place of ancient magic that they hope can protect them. With time running out, Jason Blood tells the collected magic users that they might have to make a tough choice if they want to survive what’s coming.

At the same time, Wonder Woman and Zatanna return to the Hall of Justice to find a mystery pub in the atrium. When they get closer, they discover that it belongs to Mordru, who has been waiting for the pair. He captures them easily, dangling the object they came to recover and showing the two heroes that he is more powerful than they can imagine. It’s a lesson that they need to learn quickly because the Lords of Order are on the move and it’s going to take a darker power to stop them.

The Story:

James Tynion IV is masterful at taking this story to some dark and intense places. The dialogue is fantastic and the pace of the story is thrilling and ominous as it progresses to an interesting and intriguing conclusion. He takes this giant story and finds a way to keep its fantastical elements fresh while focusing on the human stories like Zatanna’s history with her father. A great read.

The Art:

Alvaro Martinez Bueno knocks it out of the park with the art in this issue. Every panel is filled with detail and all of the characters look amazing.
