Spielberg came to SDCC to bring footage from his next film Ready Player One, based on the groundbreaking novel. The film has a definite nostalgic feel both in its look, but also in the characters chosen for many of the scenes in the trailer.

The original novel was about a world where everyone spends the majority of their time in a virtual reality world called the Oasis as the rest of society decays. When the creator of the Oasis dies in the real world, he leaves behind clues to finding his fortune. This reveal causes chaos as everyone in the game and in the real world begin searching for the clues to the treasure. A young man named Wade finds the first clue and it becomes a race against time and his fellow players to unlock the mystery.

There are so many nostalgic elements throughout the trailer including avatars based on the animated film The Iron Giant, Freddy Krueger and the hero Wade himself driving around in the DeLorean from Back to the Future. It looks visually amazing, which isn’t saying much from the director who has brought so many visually amazing stories to life on the big screen. It’s going to be a thrill to see how far this movie pushes Spielberg’s vision and capabilities as well as the technology to bring it to life.

When the creator of an MMO called the Oasis dies, he releases a video in which he challenges all Oasis users to find his Easter Egg, which will give the finder his fortune. Wade Watts finds the first clue and starts a race for the Egg. From cinematic game changer Steven Spielberg comes Ernest Cline’s holy grail of pop culture.
