The Hollywood Reporter had the exclusive story that there will be a spin-off comic from the world of Hellboy that will showcase the origins of the villainous Rasputin. The comic, titled Rasputin: Voice of the Dragon, will dive into the mythology of Rasputin and how he joined the Nazis during World War II. Chris Robinson, who co-writes the series with creator Mike Mignola, gave an interview to THR‘s Heat Vision blog where he recalled the characters origin in the comics and why they decided to fill in the time gap.

“In the waning days of WWII, a group of Nazi occultists led by the infamous Rasputin performed an arcane ritual to call up a demon from hell, intending to use it to defeat the Allied forces,” he says. “When the demon arrived, though, it was adopted by an English occult investigator, Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, who named him Hellboy. But how did Rasputin, a Russian mystic who the world believed to be dead for years, come to command such a position of authority in the Nazi leadership, and did Bruttenholm and the Allies ever suspect that he was the one pulling the strings behind the scenes?”

The first issue of Rasputin: The Voice of the Dragon will be available on Digital and in comic book stores November 29th.
