Fox Rolls Out the Next Chapter in the X-Men Universe with Upcoming Slate

With Fox’s moderate success in the X-Men universe of films with last years X-Men: Apocalypse coupled with the huge success they received for the powerhouse comic book action comedy Deadpool, Fox has decided to go big or go home by releasing to the media and fans the release dates and titles of their upcoming slate of X-Universe related feature films.

New Mutants

New Mutants, a spinoff of the current X-Men franchise of films (so who knows where it fits in the timeline) will feature an all new cast of Marvel mutants. The newest children of the atom will also be students attending the Xavier School for Gifted Children. It looks like the concept will be to keep the characters young and appeal to that demographic. The movie is expected to begin production in May and will be co-written and directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars).

X-Men: New Mutants is scheduled for release April 13, 2018.

Deadpool 2

Fox’s biggest X-Men movie to date (from the studio who didn’t want to make it in the first place) was primed for a sequel and despite the loss of the original films director and composer, it is still moving forward with as much buzz as before and maybe a little bit more. Our favorite merc with a mouth will see the return of many of the original cast (Leslie Uggams is confirmed to return as Blind Al), Deadpool will also be joined in this new film by fellow mutants Domino (Zazie Beets) and fan favorite Nathan Summers aka Cable played by Josh Brolin. Deadpool will be taking his direction from David Leitch (John Wick 2).

Deadpool 2 is expected to be released June 1, 2018.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix

After taking a stab at one of the greatest X-Men stories ever told (no pun intended X-Men: The Last Stand), Fox is rolling the dice that the second iteration of the story will connect with audiences and fans. X-Men: Dark Phoenix will pick up after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse with Sophie Turner expected to return as Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan to reprise his role as Cyclops and Alexandra Shipp coming back as Storm. No word yet on the rest of the cast, the story, a director or production start date.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is expected to rise from the ashes November 2, 2018.

So there you have it. Fox has decided to go all in with the X-Men universe (much to the chagrin of fans expecting a Marvel Studios/Sony Spider-Man deal.) Looks like the studio has a plan for the franchise and hopefully, we’ll get a chance to see what that is next year (my guess is Deadpool cameos in everything).
