The Rundown: T’Challa takes on a personal mission as he juggles being a leader in a changing Wakanda.
Black Panther leads the Avengers into battle against an unknown force in Iceland. After a fierce battle, the team is successful. In the aftermath, Steve and T’Challa discuss his role as both leader of the Avengers and an intergalactic empire. Something he will have to consider more as his presence at the latest Parliament meeting showcases the changes Wakandan government is going through as they work towards democracy. After being lectured on his decorum by a friend, T’Challa thinks about his new role among his people.
At the same time, two people sitting together at a restaurant find themselves in the middle of an active shooter situation. A car bomb lets the couple know that they are the ones being targeted. They find themselves fighting for their lives against a mysterious force. One that will lead to tragedy. A tragedy that will reveal a long buried secret that lays at the feet of the Black Panther himself.
The Story: Ridley has crafted an incredibly intriguing and interesting story in this first issue. I love the intrigue and mystery in this story and the plot grabbed my attention immediately. T’Challa’s priorities make for some great drama in and of themselves and the fact that he is dealing with a problem of his own creation is a brilliant narrative choice. I cannot wait to see where this story goes and what impact it has on the character.
The Art: Juan Cabal delivers some beautiful work throughout this issue. The style is beautifully detailed and filled with great action and character moments.
