There are going to be plenty of sneak peeks, announcements and reveals at the upcoming DC Fandome event this weekend, but one piece of news was too big to wait.
According to Deadline and other sources, it has been confirmed that Ben Affleck will return to Gotham City as the Dark Knight in the upcoming Flash film from director Andy Muschietti.
According to the Deadline story, Affleck will return as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the film which will also feature the Michael Keaton version of the character as well. Keaton’s role is said to be “substantial” to the film while Affleck’s is touted as being a cameo. Affleck’s appearance will be a personal one in regards to Bruce’s relationship with Barry. According to Muschietti; “The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before.”
The director does stress that the cameos and appearances do not take away from the fact that this is a Flash movie first. Andy Muschietti goes on to say; “It’s Barry’s movie, it’s Barry’s story, but their characters are more related than we think. They both lost their mothers to murder, and that’s one of the emotional vessels of the movie. That’s where the Affleck Batman kicks in.”
As to what Affleck’s Batman will signify in the story, Muschietti told Vanity Fair; “He’s the baseline. He’s part of that unaltered state before we jump into Barry’s adventure…There’s a familiarity there.”
Affleck’s return to the cape and cowl will happen so with Warner Brothers hoping to begin production on the film starring Ezra Miller as The Flash. The film is scheduled for release June 3, 2022.
