Lying in his office bleeding badly, Batman thinks back to his meeting with one of the people he hoped would train him and how that man had been broken by his experience with the Designer. With Joker in control of the Wayne fortune and preparing to take over the city, Batman must decide if he is going to be broken by the Clown Prince of Crime. Even with Lucius helping him, Batman knows what will happen next for the people in his life so he decides to call Catwoman.

Selina wakes up in the company of her former underworld and criminal associates who are preparing themselves to wait out whatever destruction Joker plans to bring to Gotham City and Batman finds himself injured and alone out in a city about to become a war zone.

The Story: James Tynion IV is breaking down the Batman in some interesting ways. The story is dark in both its tone and plotting. There is an edge to it that brings the reader the same level of uncertainty that many of the characters are experiencing. It’s impossible to predict that will happen next, but Tynion IV has set the story up in a way that it will never be boring. I look forward to seeing how this story develops and what changes it will have on Batman. This issue does a great job of setting up the threat, pushing the limits of that threat and focusing Batman’s purpose.

The Art: March and Albuquerque do an excellent job with the art. There are some panels that felt a little too exaggerated as far as facial expressions, but the art was well detailed throughout and fun in moments.
