The Rundown: A young woman solves a family mystery while getting immersed in another one.

Leila has traveled from her home in Canada to Los Angeles in 1979 on the hunt for a missing member of her family. She finally discovers the location of her father’s brother or her “Chachu” and finds that he has married a popular actress after turning his back on his family.

As she finds a way to connect with her uncle and is allowed to stay at his home, she wakes up to discover that her uncle’s father in law is at the home with men with guns. The man wants answers to where his daughter is and Leila and Chachu team up to find his wayward wife and discover what has happened to her.

The Story: Vellani crafts a fun, entertaining story in this first issue. I really like the setting and the tone of the story as well as the narrative voice of the main character. There is a wonderful, classic film noir tone to this issue and I think having it set in the late seventies was a great choice both thematically and narratively. It gives a gritty feel to the story and the characters and an immediacy to their circumstances. A truly fun and engaging first issue that has me interested in seeing where it goes next.

The Art: Ignazzi crafts beautifully detailed and visually compelling art throughout the first issue. From the look of the world to the details in the characters, I love the look of this issue.
