The Rundown: A young man in love must venture out into a dangerous world.
A virus has infected the population of the planet turning people into homicidal creatures. As the government attempts to regain control and stop the spread of the infection, it gets worse and the people infected begin to mutate into unspeakable creatures that force those uninfected to flee into colonies surrounded by walls and cut off from civilization.
A young woman named Oaklynn and her father are on the run from both mutants and dangerous infected humans and manage to make their way to a settlement where she meets a young man named Ryder who has never left the colony. When Oaklynn is forced to leave to find something to help her father, Ryder ventures out to find her and discovers quickly just how dangerous the world really is.
The Story: Kaplan crafts a dark, thrilling and entertaining story in this first issue. Beyond the world building, which I loved, there is a sweet and engaging love story forming between the young protagonists. I love that there are different levels of danger throughout the story and that Ryder serves as a conduit for the reader to experience and learn about this new and dangerous world. I also really loved the twist towards the end of the issue and what that means for the story and the characters going forward.
The Art: Raffaele creates beautifully detailed and visually exciting art throughout the issue. I love the imagery as well as the character designs a lot.
