The circumstances that brought Conner Kent to Gem World are laid out in this issue and they lead to an interesting reveal.

Young-Justice-3-spoilers-A

On a Gemworld farm, Bart Allen reunites with his best friend Conner Kent. In the midst of their embrace, Conner is curious how his friend made it to Gemworld in the first place. Not only that, but Bart is stunned to realize not only that Conner has been on Gemworld this entire time, but that he loves it. When a member of the royal court of Opal shows up on the Kent Farm, Bart is ready and willing to fight now that he’s been reunited with Superboy.

Conner’s journey to Gemworld begins when he fights a monster in the desert and realizes that he’s being played by another shadowy agency doing unethical tests like the one that created him. He finally decides what he wants from life, leaves school and goes after the agency and their latest experiment. Unfortunately for Conner, the experiment is a one way ticket to Gemworld and in the course of living on the planet, the reasons he decides to stay present themselves.

The rest of the team is imprisoned at the palace and can barely remember who they are let alone how they can escape. Things are going to get even weirder when Amethyst explains to them that reality is falling apart and there is nothing they can do about it.

Brian Michael Bendis has impressed me so far with this series and this issue builds on that impressive story. The dialogue is great and the moment between Conner and Bart is priceless. Bendis adds some incredibly surprising twists in this issue and Conner’s time on Gemworld becomes a lot more compelling.

Patrick Gleason and Viktor Bogdanovic bring some great art to this issue and their styles meld perfectly with the tone and pace of the story.
