Deadline is reporting in an exclusive that Warner Brothers has tapped a director for the next screen outing of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.

Deadline Studio Portraits at Sundance, Day 2, Park City, USA - 20 Jan 2018

According to the story, Warner Brothers and DC Entertainment have chosen up and coming director Cathy Yan to helm what is being called an “untitled girl gang movie”, but Deadline is confident in their belief that the film in question is the Birds of Prey movie written by newly named Batgirl screenwriter Christina Hodson. Yan has a single directing credit, an indie drama named Dead Pigs, which won the World Cinema Dramatic Award for Ensemble acting at Sundance last year. This would be her first big budget film as well as the first superhero film directed by an Asian female.

Margot Robbie is producing the film and was insistent on a female director and, according to the Deadline story, Yan gave an amazing presentation for her take on Birds of Prey. In the comics, the team consists of Batgirl, Huntress and Black Canary. It will be interesting to see how they incorporate Harley Quinn into the story, especially with the character slated to appear in three other films including Gotham City Sirens and the Suicide Squad sequel.
