Odin knows that war is coming and he is preparing for it the only way he knows how.

Unfortunately, the way he know how to prepare for war is to send his brother away and alienate his son Thor into a fight that neither can afford to have in the ruins of Old Asgard.

Odin goads and taunts Thor into a confrontation that will force the two to battle it out across the realm. Blow after blow shatters the last remnants of respect Thor has for his father, but the All-Father himself has secrets he is keeping close to his chest. Secrets that could change everything about his relationship with his son.

At the same time, Loki attempts to establish his presence with Laufey and the Frost Giants. When the trickster is pushed to commit an act he balks at, his failure is noted by everyone including Malekith.

With the War of the Realms looming, Jason Aaron takes the time to work out some deep father/son dysfunction in this issue. The Thor/Odin conflict takes center stage and Aaron does an amazing job of showing the conflict within Odin and how his interactions with his son are part of a destructive, abusive pattern he recognizes, but can’t seem to escape. There are a lot of deep moments in this issue and even Odin’s conflict with Cul has a deeper meaning when filtered through the lens of Odin’s own abusive past.

Aaron is equally adept at mining the relationship between Loki and Laufey for interesting drama. Their conflicts fall along the same lines and Laufey’s pushing of Loki showcases the limits of even what Loki is willing to do.

Mike Del Mundo delivers another beautiful work of art in this issue. Every page and panel is glorious in both style and detail.
