The Rundown: A pair of friends find themselves embroiled in a supernatural mystery.
A man goes to pay a visit to a patient in the local asylum and walks out in handcuffs after shooting him in the head. The story goes back to thirty years earlier where two young men meet at an art exhibit and quickly become friends. As the years go on, Daniel and Edward become part of each other’s lives from childhood to young adulthood.
As they grow older and their lives diverge, they still stay friends and Daniel sees Edward physically change while he immerses himself in his work at the university. Work that will change Edward in ways his friend could not imagine as he discovers that someone else has an interest in the subjects he is studying.
The Story: Birks creates a thrilling, engaging and entertaining mystery in this first issue. I love the nods to Lovecraft and his lore in this story and the story begins with a great jolt to the reader. I like that the story takes the time to develop the relationship between Daniel and Edward and give the reader the opportunity to care about these characters as we see them change grow and diverge into their own lives. It makes the beginning more tragic and interesting as well as make me interested in seeing the events leading up to that moment.
The Art: Roberts creates beautifully dark and intense art throughout the issue. I love the visual contrast between the characters and how wonderfully detailed the visual are.
