Little Maura watches with delight as her father gets himself ready to fight. As her demon father prepares for the battle ahead, she peppers him with questions about female demons before leaving her in the car to join up with his fellow bosses and their forces.

She watches with glee as her father and the rest of the demons take on a group of Verlochin, causing massive carnage along the way. The first thing I’ll say is that the art is amazing. There is an element of Mike Mignola’s Hellboy in some of the visuals and that works given the characters and their world. It’s brutal to witness, but fun to see and I loved looking at the details in each panel as well as watching how they flow along with the story. A few years later, we get to see Maura as a young woman, still watching and listening in on things that don’t concern her.

She sees that there are cracks in her father’s organization and she decides to confront her dad after one of his men leaves angry. At the same time, Morgan and Darcy are going over the events of the evening and she wants some answers. Answers that Morgan is willing to give as soon as he gets a drink. He lays out the shadow world around them that only certain people can see and she seems to take it well. What follows is great drama as someone gets betrayed to an enemy and Maura sets her own plans in motion that could be devastating to the world itself.

I came in late to this series and started with the first issue a few days ago. I became hooked after that and managed to catch up to this one still wanting to know more about this world and these characters. This is a great take on the mafia genre with great dialogue and atmosphere. Definitely worth a read.
