Having nightmares about Captain Marvel punching a hole in your chest would be enough to drive anyone to drink and Star is no exception. The former hero turned villain and current fugitive is drowning her sorrows at a pop up villain bar when the opportunity to flex her powers appears in the form of Titania. Unfortunately, not knowing how to work the Infinity Stone fused to her will make her the target of dark forces including Loki.

When Star begins to flex her powers and escape, she decides to go to someone who might be able to help her find some answers; Jessica Jones. Unfortunately for the former reporter, she failed to realize that Jones is one of Danvers’ friends and when Star attempts to use her stone to mind control the detective, she gets a lesson in how much Jessica hates mind control.

The Story: Dark and filled with tension, Kelly Thompson crafts a story about a woman holding incredible power, but personally lost. I like that Thompson doesn’t try to get you to like Star and doesn’t manipulate the reader emotionally by trying to minimize what she did. The story acknowledges the fact that Ripley Ryan is not a good person and the fact that she’s carrying an infinity stone inside her makes her an even bigger danger to others and, more importantly, herself. A great, compelling first issue that makes me interested in seeing where the story goes next.

The Art: Pina and Andrade deliver some beautiful visuals throughout this issue. The characters look amazing and the art does a great job of pulling back the action to concentrate on the human story at the heart of this issue.
