The number of superhero films that are currently in development doesn’t seem to be getting smaller as another one is reportedly in development with a big name director attached.
According to multiple reports, Luke Cage series creator and executive producer Cheo Hodari Coker has written a script for a movie based on the Spider-Man character Nightwatch. It’s also being reported that director Spike Lee is attached to direct the film.
Spike Lee has a long history in Hollywood and is known for his eclectic body of work that includes films like Do the Right Thing, Jungle Fever, He Got Game, Chi-raq and the upcoming Black Klansman. This will be the first superhero movie the director has tackled.
Nightwatch was first introduced in Web of Spider-Man in 1993. Nightwatch is the code name of Dr. Kevin Trench. After witnessing a costumed hero killed in a battle with terrorists, Trench removes the man’s mask to find a future version of himself dying. He puts on the suit later and is given superhuman strength, speed, agility and the ability to become invisible as well as shapeshifting.
Nightwatch made sporadic appearances in the 90’s and had his own short-lived title until it was canceled. He would resurface in 2014 in the She-Hulk series, having his story retconned to make him a supervillain.
