The Rundown: Young Erica finds herself at a resort dealing with a dangerous creature in the nearby woods.

Jessica and a young Erica make their way deep into the woods to a mountain resort in the winter. A mountain resort where the manager and the local sheriff have a difference in opinion on how to deal with the rash of disappearances plaguing the area. As Erica takes over checking in from a seemingly distracted Jessica, the sheriff confronts the resort manager about the people still hiking the trails.

At the same time, a couple walking one of those trails finds a bloody, scared young girl hiding among the trees. As they go to her and help her, she reveals that they are surrounded. Surrounded by creatures that the adults cannot see.

The Story: The story in this issue continues to delve into Erica’s past and James Tynion IV takes the time to set the stage with both the setting and characters. There is a definite vibe of The Shining with the hotel and I like seeing the side characters introduced before diving into the darker elements of the story. The plot moves slowly and deliberatively in this issue to give the reader a sense of the atmosphere and character conflicts to come and I appreciated that aspect.

The Art: Dell’edera crafts some beautiful art throughout the issue. The visuals capture the expansive nature of the environment before introducing the danger the characters will face.
