“In Marvel Studios’ new series “Secret Invasion,” set in the present day MCU, Nick Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.”
The show opens with a meeting between Agents Ross and Prescod, the latter claiming to have vital information regarding Skrull related terrorist activities. However, all is not as it seems as Agent Maria Hill and Talos arrive on the scene. This wildly disturbing introduction quickly alerts the audience to the high level stakes involved in the series.
Next, Nick Fury returns to Earth in dramatic fashion, as news of a friend’s death and rumors of a threat prompt him to investigate. He then meets with both friends and acquaintances to determine the level of threat and current participants involved in the violent activities. This section does much to sum up the plot and introduce the major players of the show.
Finally, we meet G’iah, a Skrull who is dedicated to preserving the way of life of her people and her involvement with a rogue militia group is highlighted. Her ties to Nick Fury’s team are quickly uncovered, and an attempt to win her over leads to disaster. The final section of this dark narrative is filled with chaos and takes an unexpected turn.
Although several characters are introduced, this episode mainly focuses on Nick Fury and his mindset after returning from The Snap. It is clear he is a different person, and though he seems decidedly older and less “in the know,” one has to wonder how much of this is actually due to his “crisis of faith.” Although his current state tracks based on his characterization in Captain Marvel, it is not implausible to believe he is also playing up on supposed frailties to determine whom he can trust.
