Greetings Starfighter!!

Rogue One: A Star Wars story writer Gary Whitta gave sci-fi fans a preview of what might be his next project with some concept art that he released on Twitter.

That’s right everyone, Whitta released images that suggest that he is working on either a sequel or a reboot to the 1984 classic The Last Starfighter from Universal Pictures.

The Last Starfighter tells the story of Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) whose prowess at a video game called Starfighter turns out to be a test to pick him as a pilot for an intergalactic force called the Rylan Star League to defend the planet Rylos against the plans of Xur and the Ko-Dan armada. In the film, Alex’s worlds collide when he becomes the last starfighter and must defend Rylos in order to protect the people he loves on Earth.

The Last Starfighter was not a box office success during its initial theatrical release, but has gone on to be a cult classic film with generations of fans discovering it.

Whitta left the tweet and the concept art with this quote;

“Okay, probably shouldn’t show you this so early but here’s a little something I’ve been tinkering on with my co-writer Jonathan Betuel,” Whitta wrote. “You might recognize the ships. Thanks to the amazing Matt Allsopp (lead concept artist on ROGUE ONE) for creating these images for us.”

Reboots and remakes have been talked about for years, but this is the first time that fans of the film have gotten some new information about a possible screenplay.

More on this story as it develops.
