Steven Spielberg’s big screen adaptation of Ernest Cline’s novel has topped the box office in its first week of release.

In a pre-summer that has been dominated by Marvel’s Black Panther, the latest release from the prolific director of E.T. and Jaws was destined to do well this weekend. The film, which cost $175 million to produce, won the box office with an estimated $181.2 million worldwide, $10 million higher than it was estimated to bring in.

Ready Player One had the second biggest opening in China, where it took an impressive $61.7 million at the box office.

Black Panther took in another $11 million this weekend and is expected to surpass both Jurassic World and Titanic at the domestic box office while it sits at the fifth-highest US release of all time.

Positive word of mouth has propelled Ready Player One beyond its proposed $45 million opening and positive user reviews are drawing in more people to the theater. We’ll see where the momentum continues for the film as it starts its first full week of release.
