The Rundown: Newburn is forced to take a case that puts him at odds with some dangerous people.

Newburn is called into a meeting with someone important because a member of the police department has been murdered. After initially refusing because of how the conflict will affect his other clients, Newburn discovers quickly that the police can be just as ruthless as the men who pay him to keep the peace. After telling Emily what they’re up against, he confides in her that he needs her in order to complete the case and get them both out of the crosshairs.

Their investigation of the crime scene leads Newburn to make a desperate gamble to get face time with the leader of one of the crime families and the killer he’s protecting. With the potential of a war between the families and the police simmering, Newburn decides to take a different tactic with the leader of the police union. One that will make his life more difficult.

The Story: Zdarsky beautifully delivers great noir detective drama on every page of this issue. Newburn continues to be a wonderfully complex and interesting character and I love that Emily is given agency in the story as well. Her motivations and dialogue are great and the journal entries do a brilliant job of fleshing out the world of these characters. I love how ominous the ending of the issue is and what it means for the character going forward.

The Art: Phillips delivers great visual drama and tone with the art. The style is perfect and brilliantly uses shadow to convey the dark mood of the plot.
